Choose the Right Service
Self Care
Self-care is usually the best choice to treat very minor illnesses, ailments and injuries. A range of common illnesses and complaints, such as coughs, colds, sore throats, upset stomachs and aches and pains, can often be treated at home.
Be prepared to care for yourself with a well-stocked medicine cabinet and plenty of rest:
- cough or cold
- upset stomach
- pain or headache
- cuts and grazes
- sore throat (but if for two weeks or more contact your GP)
Pharmacy
Your local high street pharmacy can provide confidential, expert advice and treatment for a range of common illnesses and complaints, without having to wait for a GP appointment or go to A&E. To find your nearest local pharmacy, visit www.nhs.uk.
Ask for advice on ailments, medicines and healthier living:
- queries about medication, dosage, type or suitability plus urgent requests or if related to hospital discharge
- repeat prescription
- sore eyes (but if persists go to optician)
- runny nose
- diarrhoea
- bite or sting
You may be referred to a pharmacist by your GP; further information on this is available here: Community Pharmacist Consultation Service – Oakwood Surgery.
GP
If you have an illness or injury that won’t go away, then you need to make an appointment here at your GP practice. GP practices provide care, which may involve appointments or telephone advice either with a GP or practice nurse.
GPs are able to provide a range of services by appointment, including medical advice, examinations and prescriptions.
Make an appointment if an illness or injury won’t go away:
- Repeat prescription such as for back ache, the pill, etc.
- Urgent skin problem such as a rash that is spreading
- Ear pain
- Back ache
Additional evenings and weekend appointments are also bookable through your GP Practice
NHS 111
NHS111 is a free service, available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. It offers help and advice for those times when it’s not a 999 emergency, but you do need help and advice fast. When you dial 111 you will be directed to the best local service for you.
Call when situation is not life-threatening:
- If you think you need to go to hospital
- If you don’t know the most suitable place to go or call
- If you don’t have a GP to call or if your GP practice is closed
- If you need advice or reassurance about what to do
Available 24 hours a day, every day.
Accident & Emergency
Accident & Emergency (A&E) and the 999 ambulance service should only be used in a critical or life-threatening situation. Dialing 999 and stating an emergency situation will result in a response vehicle being sent to your location.
Only for very serious or life-threatening situations; if you are unsure, call NHS 111.
Please remember A&E departments and the 999 ambulance service are for genuine accidents and emergencies. Inappropriate use of these services can cause unnecessary delays for those who need urgent care and wastes precious resources.
Local A&E/emergency departments for Fylde and Wyre residents are located at:

Home visits
Our Surgery offers home visits for patients who are housebound (the frail, elderly or vulnerable patients).
We request that you call us before 10.30am to arrange this so that we can assess the need for a visit the same day. However, please note that all Home Visits are at the doctor’s discretion and they may wish to assess your situation over the telephone and advise you appropriately.
- Be prepared to tell the receptionist about your condition so we can prioritise the most urgent cases and arrange the most appropriate course of action.
- Ensure the surgery has up to date details of your address and telephone number.
Home visits are deemed to be emergency services and, therefore, it is not always possible to offer a home visit at short notice or on the same day.
It is always better for the doctor to assess you in the surgery, where your full medical records and diagnostic equipment are available, which leads to a better service to yourself.
